Europe plays a key role in the international plastics industry. It is the second largest producer of plastic in the world, producing about 50 million tons per year.2 The most common use of plastic in the EU is for packaging: about 40% of total plastic consumption. In doing so, much of the material produced is used to make single-use products that quickly lose their value through incineration, landfill and marine litter.
